Harley Quinn's Birds Of Prey Sequel Has Reportedly Been Canceled

A sequel to 2020's Birds of Prey has reportedly been shelved after the original performed poorly at the box office.

It will have been a while since most people reading this last paid a visit to a movie theater. That's due to Hollywood being put on hold and theaters around the world shutting up shop as they wait for the COVID-19 outbreak to ease and for the pandemic to pass. In some parts of the world, it seems as if that is starting to happen, and theaters can start to open back up.

There have been a lot of movies that have been subject to having their release dates pushed. There are even a few that have opted to bypass theaters altogether and head straight to on-demand and streaming services. Some movies were lucky enough to get out to the people just under the COVID wire. Those movies include Sonic the Hedgehog and Birds of Prey.

While Sonic over-performed in theaters, the creators of Birds of Prey might have wished the movie's release had been swept up by the pandemic. That would have explained why the Harley Quinn-centric movie performed so poorly at the box office. The $200 million it made in ticket sales is the worst to date in DCEU history.

Turns out Birds of Prey's box office performance was so bad that Warner Bros. has opted to scrap the sequel it had planned for the movie. That's according to Giant Freakin Robot via Cosmic Book News. Apparently Warner Bros. "no longer believes in the concept or in the creative team behind the movie." There are also reports that Gotham City Sirens is on hold, but no word on why that might be.

Birds of Prey 2's removal from the DCEU schedule also throws Harley Quinn's cinematic future into disarray. Margot Robbie will return as Quinn in The Suicide Squad, and the animated version, voiced by Kaley Cuoco, is enjoying a lot of success on TV. Quinn is clearly a very popular DC character, and Robbie portrays her brilliantly, so we doubt her appearance in The Suicide Squad will be the last we see of her.
